We Are God’s Tenth Word
“What does that mean?” you may ask. The answer is found in the beautiful chapter of Psalm 19! If you look carefully, you'll notice nine synonyms representing God speaking through his creation in the first four verses. Verses seven through nine begin a new set of six synonyms of how God speaks to us through his Word. To Summarize, we have God speaking nine times through his creation, and six times through his Word.
Counting these occurrences may not seem significant, but upon closer inspection, we learn that the LORD uses the numbers three, seven, ten, twelve, and fifteen to teach His people about Himself—but never nine or six. Nine and six are incomplete numbers. So, when these numbers show up, we need to stop and pay attention—there’s some reason for the incompleteness.
In the very last verse of Psalm 19, we discover the missing pieces! "May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in Your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.” There it is! Our word completes both sets. We are God's Tenth Word and seventh Word.
His creation tells of who He is. His Word tells of who He is. But we who He created in His image—we are given the privilege of being that completing word: We are to tell the world who our God is.
The remaining verses tell us how to do this. Verses five through six seem to have no correlation to the rest of the chapter, but instead take a tangent to the sun. "Nothing is hidden from its heat" we are told. So it is to be with God's Word; we must walk in the light as He is in the light, and allow His Word to shine into every area of our life. We are to live under the influence of God’s Word. Just as we cannot live without the sun, so we cannot truly live apart from the Word of God. Verse ten says that God's Word is to be desired more than gold: We are to treasure His Word above all else. It also says that it is sweeter than the purest honey: We must desire His Word above all else. When our priorities and desires are aligned with God, how could we not testify to the world of who our God is? Let us pray, as David did, "Let the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in Your sight, O LORD, my rock and my redeemer.” Let us be His Tenth Word!
